This is a fine beaded hide sheath with inlaid pewter trade knife from the Pawnee Native American Indians dating to the 19th Century. The set is attributed to the Pawnee Indians of Kansas and is made of Indian brain-tanned buckskin with beautiful beaded Central Plains geometrid design and colors all in 19th Century glass trade seed beads. The beads include colors of greasy yellow, semi-transparent rose, cobalt and chalk white. The original braided tie strap is attached and the sheath is in very good well kept condition, with minor wear. Each sheath edge has two old hand rolled tin cone danglers with a large brass trade bead and old red stroud clothe strips. The sheath is paired with an old pewter inlaid trade knife that has a maker’s touchmark on the left side of the blade that reads, “American Cutlery Company 1865”. The hilt area is poured pewter which goes into a cross hatch inlaid design with pewter pommel butt cap end with the same cross hatch inlaid design. A beautiful set. Provenance: From the Gary Henderson collection of Ohio. Sheath measures 10 inches in length. Trade knife measures 10 ½ inches in length.
