This is an original albumen photograph of Ho Washta – Pretty Voice of the Yankton Sioux dating to circa 1888 by photographer George W. Scott of Fort Yates, Dakota Territory. The cabinet card albumen photograph shows Yankton Lakota Sioux Ho Washta or Pretty Voice posing in his extraordinary tacked and metal beaded breast plate with heavy beaded necklaces and additional breast plate holding his Winchester Model 1873 lever action rifle, around his neck a large shell medallion concho. The card is correctly stamped “Pretty Voice” and handwritten 1888, below this its marked Fort Yates, Dakota Geo. W. Scott. There is only one other image of Pretty Voice documented which shows him in the same war regalia, likely taken at the same time but in more of a portrait bust (closer up) in the North Dakota Heritage Center State Museum Collection From the George Ingram Foster Photograph Collection. George W. Scott (1854-1910) or (1843-1900) spent his career alternating between Army work in the signal service and weather bureau, and as a professional photographer in various western towns known to document historic images of the Plains Indians, such as this piece. This card in its form is nearly identical to the Geo. W. Scott Cabinet Card of Walk a Heap a Sioux Indian which is identically dated 1888 from the Thomas Minckler Collection. Provenance: From the Jim Aplan Piedmont, South Dakota collection. The back is marked #932 and $700.00 as well as a 6 in a circle. The card is well kept with a nice image, some corner wear. U6.*
