The lot features a large collection of circa 1889-1890’s Cigarette Tobacco playing cards from Dukes Cigarettes 1889, Allen & Ginter’s 1890, Goodwin & Co. Old Judge Cigarettes, W.M.S. Kimball & Co's Cigarettes and Kinney Bros High Class Cigarettes (1880-1890’s). Total of 36 cards / booklets.
First shows a collection of five Duke’s Cigarettes 1889 playing card booklets featuring 16 pages each and an illustrated front and back cover along with Duke’s advertisements. Three of the books in this collection are from the "Histories of The Following Generals" series, which covers a specific general and gives a 16 page history about them. The first one is titled, "A Short History of Gen. Leonidas Polk", the second is titled, "A Short History of General John Morgan" and the third is titled, "A Short History of Gen. Phil. Sheridan". The other two books in this collection are from another Duke's Cigarettes series titled, "Histories of Poor Boys Who Have Become Rich and Other Famous People". The first book in this series is titled, "Life of Prof. Huxley" and the second book in this series is titled, "Life of Horace B. Claflin". Each 2.75-inch by 1.5-inch.
Next is a collection of 17 Allen & Ginter’s 1890 cards from the "City Flags", "U. S. Flags of the States and Territories" and "Flags of all Nations" collections. Each shows a different flag artwork from different states and countries such as England, Trieste, Florida, New Hampshire, Leghorn, Queensland, California, Nebraska, Switzerland, Vermont, Kentucky, Belgium, Texas, Toulouse, Portugal, Smyrna, and Smyrna. Each marked on the bottom Allen & Ginter’s Cigarettes Richmond, Virginia on the front artwork. On the back with Flags Of All Nations and United States Flags of the States and Territories with a list of each below. Each is 2.75-inch by 1.5-inch.
