The lot features a fantastic circa 1890-1900's beaded Indian hide basketry cradle board papoose from the Paiute from the Warm Springs Indian Reservation of Oregon. The piece shows an Indian tanned buckskin deer hide with wonderful fringes and pictorial geometric beadwork over a basketry cradleboard frame. The beadwork shows a tipi / tepee pattern as well as a diamond Maltese cross like pattern showing colors of greasy light blue, cobalt, semi-transparent red and corn yellow. The cradle board shows an Indian tanned buckskin visor covered with old red stroud woolen trade clothe border. The basketry frame is present showing basketry ties and Indian tanned buckskin lacing ties, there is some loss and a piece of backing has been inserted for display purposes. The cradle board shows sinew and trade thread sewing. The back shows a large section of Indian tanned thick hide long fringes that wrap around to the front as well. There are some old repairs present. Hides are well preserved and mostly supple. Measures 34-inches long by 14.5-inches wide. Early Paiute beaded cradle boards are highly sought after with basketry frames; see the example sold by Cowan's in 2020 for $3,840 from the first quarter 20th century.
