The lot features a nice polychrome painted parfleche rawhide dispatch bag / flat bag envelope from the Northern Plains or Plateau dating to circa 1890-1930's from an old Montana collection. The lot features a parfleche rawhide flat bag with double "V" top flap showing classic geometric polychrome painted designs seen from the Northern Plains or Plateau, such as the Northern Cheyenne and Nez Perce. The paints appear to be mineral pigment natural paints showing colors of red, green, yellow and blue with black outline. There are triangle, diamond and cross designs. The piece exhibits a single piece of parfleche rawhide folded and sewn with Indian brain tanned hide lacing with hide fringes. The paint is also on the back showing a rectangular border. There is some old discoloration, some slight paint loss and remnants of Indian smoke brain tanning. Provenance: From an old Montana collection. Overall with fringes and tie the bag measures 19-inches high by 20-inches wide. The bag itself without fringes and ties is about 10.75-inches by 8.75-inches.
