This is an original circa 1890 colored engraving Le Petit Journal of William Frederick (Buffalo Bill) Cody by Fortuné Louis Méaulle and Henri Meyer. The front of the Le Petit Journal Supplement Illustre French paper shows a large engraving of Buffalo Bill on horseback by Fortuné Louis Méaulle (F. Meaulle, 1844-1916) and Henri Meyer (1841-1899), both signed in the art bottom right and left respectively. Buffalo Bill Cody had toured France in 1889 and then had been summoned to meet with Sitting Bull on the eve of the Wounded Knee massacre, though Cody was on a diplomatic mission. He is here depicted in full color with guns a-blazing. A small article on the final page provides more context. The front cover shows the wonderfully illustrated Buffalo Bill on horse back in bright color in a graphic scene at Wounded Knee. Fortuné Louis Méaulle was a renowned French wood-engraver and writer who apprenticed with Joseph Burn-Smeeton (1840-1880) and Auguste Tilly (1840-1898) and worked for Louis Hachette, consisting of Charles Laplante, Henri Theophile Hildibrand and Charles Barbant. He was known for his covers of the Le Petit Journal with Henri Meyer (also known as Jacques Meyer and Reyem). The piece is well kept with nice coloring and has some slight flaking to the page, small discoloration and some disjoining of th spine at the base, all consistent with age. The measurements of this journal is 16 1/4" x 11 1/2".
