The lot features a beautiful circa 1890 Cheyenne cowrie shell and beaded Indian hide dress with winding river or snake beaded design collected from the Cheyenne Wind River Indian Reservation and from the ex-Dale Harrison collection. The dress is comprised of Indian tanned hide with frilly Indian hide fringes and various sections of sinew sewn geometric beadwork along the bottom, shoulder cape and neck in a traditional Cheyenne pattern and coloring. The beads are all old 1800’s glass trade seed beads showing colors of greasy yellow, chalk white, cobalt, light sky padre blue and red white heart. The beadwork shows a classic Cheyenne tab design and across the bottom a wonderful winding river or snake zig-zag curved design. The neck shows a double band of beadwork along with a row of wampum cowrie shell beads. Provenance: The set was collected from the Wind River Cheyenne Indian Reservation in the 1900’s and is from the ex-Dale Harrison Cincinnati, Ohio collection of fine beadwork. The dress shows some stains, soiling, some patina, and some stiffness, but mostly supple soft hides with little to no bead loss. Measures overall 50-inches long by 38-inches wide.
