This is a stunning and rare circa 1890 Sioux Ghost Dance beaded medicine bag / tobacco pouch that is polychrome painted and beaded from a fine Paris, France collection. The bag exhibits a larger medicine bag size or tobacco pouch from the Ghost Dance movement of the Sioux. The piece is comprised of Indian tanned hide that is sinew sewn with rolled tin jingle dangle cone bottom fringes. The front shows a mineral pigment green and red painted surface, similar to that of Ghost Dance shields, and is further adorned with sinew sewn beadwork. The beadwork is done in all 19th-century glass trade seed beads showing a waterbird / peyote bird at the center with radiating lines having buffalo / bison tracks and other symbols. The edge is bordered with a fancy sinew sewn beaded design. The beadwork shows colors of amber, dark red and chalk white. The bag is filled with items including fibers and corn. Provenance: Collected from Paul’s Rare and Vintage Antiques and from a private collection out of Paris, France. Ghost Dance beaded bags including pipe bags, tobacco bags and medicine bags are incredible scarce with this being a very fine and uniquely painted example. For reference see the Sioux / Arapaho Beaded Ghost Dance Bag from Robert Jerich listed by Cowan’s in their September 2020 sale for $12,000 and the Sioux Beaded Hide Ghsot Dance Tobacco Bag ex-Tony Perry Collection sold by Cowan’s in their April 2018 auction for nearly $7,000 (w/ bp). This truly stunning beaded bag shows classic Ghost Dance imagery and is truly well kept with mostly supple hide with some stiffening, little to no bead loss and much of the original paint. Measures 11-inches long by 7.25-inches wide.
