The lot features a circa 1920’s porcupine quill quillwork box from the Chippewa / Ojibwa. The box is comprised of a birch bark construction with artful porcupine quill quillwork designs over both the lid and base and the top of the lid has a wonderful whimsical quilled flower design. The art of decorating items with porcupine quills is unique to North America. The Native peoples living in the Great Lakes area were doing quill work before the first European contact in 1615. Much sought after, this work was encouraged by French fur traders these Native American peoples-- mostly the Ottawa and Chippewa-- began to place quill decorations on birch bark boxes. The box has some quill loss, some natural color fading and some nice patina. Nice overall medium size measures 5 5/8-inch diameter by 2.5-inches high.
