This is a truly stunning, well-preserved, and colorful Navajo Yei Pictorial Rug with prominent hooked border from a large, private Navajo rug collection and dating to circa 1920's. The rug exhibits five Yei figures (also referred to as Yei-be-chai / Yei / Yei Be Chei / Yeibechai) in striking polychrome well-preserved colors including purple, sage green, orange, lilac purple to light blue, yellow, red, grey, white, black and brown. Typically early examples such as this show the purple faded to a grey, with this retaining most if not all of the original purple color which is truly stunning. The rug has a prominent Greek “T” Hooked or Fish Hook geometric border in a J.B. Moore Trading Post fashion with colors of black, sage green, and red. The background of the rug is heathered grey and the Yei in colorful pictorial form. The rug is fine and tightly woven with beautiful wool including some handspun natural and aniline dyes. One of the best Yei bordered rugs of a early age that we have offered, and quite possibly one of the best Yei rugs on the market. Measures overall 52.5-inches by 34.5-inches.
