The lot features a hand-signed and stamped circa 1920-1940 Tlingit Frances Carlson carved and painted tourist trade totem pole sculpture with U.S. Indian Department stamping. The bottom is hand signed in fountain pen ink, "Frances Carlson Skagway, Alaska" and stamped on the back, "(D) U.S.I.D. ALASKA (something illegible)." U.S.I.D. stands for the United States Indian Department. The name U.S. Indian Department dates to circa 1849-1947, in 1947 the Department of the Interior adopted the name "Bureau of Indian Affairs". The piece has the totem, removable wings and two removable horns all carved from cedar. Measures overall 16.25-inches high by 14-inches wide by 3.75-inches deep.
