The lot features a circa 1930-1940’s porcupine quill quillwork box from the Chippewa / Ojibwa. The box is comprised of a birch bark construction with artful porcupine quill quillwork designs over both the lid and base. The top shows a classic maple leaf design in green on a natural cream / white base with pink flourish on the border of the lid. The art of decorating items with porcupine quills is unique to North America. The Native peoples living in the Great Lakes area were doing quill work before the first European contact in 1615. Much sought after, this work was encouraged by French fur traders these Native American peoples-- mostly the Ottawa and Chippewa-- began to place quill decorations on birch bark boxes. This example is well kept with nice coloring, little quill loss. Measures 4.5-inch diameter by 2 3/8-inches.
