Featured in this lot is this Peruvian Paracas Guardian Spirit tapestry circa 1940's. The tapestry features a wonderfully and professionally crafted wool design that shows a olive field with light brown fringe and border around a checkered tapestry setting of Paracas Guardian Sprit Figurals. The Paracas Guardian Spirit, often represented by the "Oculate Being," is a central, recurring, and supernatural figure in the art of the ancient Paracas culture of Peru (approx. 700 B.C.E. to 200 C.E.). Appearing as a "flying" or "floating" entity in textiles and ceramics, this deity likely represents a shaman or a deified being, characterized by large, staring eyes, anthropomorphic features, and often, holding symbolic trophy heads, symbolizing power, fertility, and the spirit realm. The condition of this tapestry is well preserved for its age with some slight wear to it consistent with some age but otherwise shows a well preserved overall condition. The measurements of this tapestry is 61" x 23 1/4".
