Featured in this lot is this Old Hopi Sterling Silver Overlay Gorget Choker Necklace, circa 1950s to 1960s, signed. The centre pendant displays the corn symbol between the two halves of a water bird. The outer segments display Kiwa, whirlwind and rain clouds symbols. Hopi jewelry is renowned for its intricate silver overlay technique, where symbolic imagery is meticulously hand-cut from a top sheet of silver and soldered onto a darkened, textured base. These designs are deeply rooted in Hopi culture, drawing inspiration from ancient pottery, rock art, and Katsina spirits. Symbols like Rain Clouds, Lightning, and Water Waves are vital, representing the growth and sustenance of life-giving corn crops. Centre pendant has a half-moon hallmark on the reverse. Overall, the necklace is in very good condition, with a rich patina observed throughout. Measures 16"L from clasp to clasp, collective weight is 43.7 grams.
