This lot includes two (2) very rare booklets about the famous actor, and humorous social commentator Will Rogers, "Cadet Days of Will Rogers", and a copy of the school news pamphlett, the "Kemperite"; both published in December 1935 by his alma mater, Kemper Military School of Boonville, MO. Rogers had just been honored and memorialized on campus on November 3 after his untimely death in a plane crash with famed aviation pioneer Wiley Post earlier in August of that same year. The booklets chronicle his two years as a cadet with personal letters and remembrances from former fellow cadets and instructors, early photographs adorn the pages as well as hand-drawn cartoon sketches depicting him in different situations, many humourous.
Rogers held up a "magic mirror" that reflected iconic American values, he had a knack of moving freely among all social classes, his stance kept him above political parties, and had a passion for fair play. He represented the "American Adam" with his independence and self-made record. Rogers furthermore represented the "American Prometheus" through his commitment to utilitarian methods and his ever-optimistic faith in future progress.
