Featured in this lot is this vintage cast iron Fairbanks platform and beam scale circa 1860-1890s. As one of the nation's oldest industrial manufacturing companies, Fairbanks Scales has consistently maintained a solid reputation of providing top quality products and service since 1830. In 1830, Thaddeus built his first real scale and applied for a patent. The new scale was a hit. Before the design was finalized, customers were already placing orders. E & T Fairbanks & Company offices were soon opened in the cities of Boston and New York. In the meantime, Fairbanks’ scales were also being sold throughout Europe. Thaddeus had the foresight to sell manufacturing rights to H. Poole and Sons in England in the 1830s, thus creating an international marketing niche. Buyers knew they could count on Fairbanks-a company respected for its accuracy, dependability and longevity—to deliver the best product available. This scale shows a scoop style basin for weighing items and features a single beam with four different sliding weights showing 1.5 pounds, two .75 pounds and 6 ounces. The front of the scale reads, "Fairbanks". Underneath the scale there are some series of numbers and letters reading, "2", "PCQ1C", "PGQ2" and "B". On a beam that holds the scoop in place, it reads, "KV208" or "KV20B". The scale appears to be in working order and shows some wear and light rusting spots from its vintage age. Overall the scale shows good condition. The scale measures
