Presented in this lot is a First Edition of "Centennial Campaign: The Sioux War of 1876", by John S. Gray, 1976, The Old Army Press publisher. Part of the "Source Custeriana Series", provides a comprehensive view of the 1876 campaign, moving beyond just the Battle of the Little Bighorn to include logistical and political context. Gray offers a "total view" of the military operations, moving beyond just the famous Custer "massacre" to detail field operations, troop movements, and the political maneuvering that made the war inevitable. A unique second part of the book consists of seven chapters where Gray reconstructs Native American movements and concentrations through rigorous analysis of historical data. He argues that the war was a result of the U.S. government's failure to keep miners out of the Black Hills and highlights the strategic failures of American military leadership. John S. Gray (1910-1991) was a professor at Northwestern University who focused on American frontier history, particularly the Indian Wars. From the Marshall University Library.
