The lot features a Central Plains Indian attributed beaded split Buffalo Bison horn war bonnet headdress. The piece is comprised of Indian brain-tanned Buffalo Bison hide cape with fur on the outside and two split, beveled and polished Buffalo horns, strips of old trade clothe, trade bead loops, two long strands of trade beads with tin cone dangles and a long-painted Buffalo hide trailer. The piece shows Indian hide ties still intact and the tips of the split carved polished horns have sections of rawhide fringe, banded linear seed beadwork and dyed horse tail hair along with brass hawk trade bells. A large colorful, beaded hoop is attached to the back of the headdress sitting upon the Buffalo hair at the connection where two connecting strands align of old wound glass padre greasy blue and white trade beads which are holding the horns upright. At the front is an Indian tanned hide geometric beaded brow band in Central Plains region design all in old glass trade seed beads with colors of semi-transparent green, chalk white, red and blue on notch-cut hide. The side of the brow band has two more round beaded sections done in a greasy light blue and the top tips are done in greasy light blue, cobalt, greasy yellow and red. The war bonnet appears to be sinew sewn and has a supple soft hide along with the inside of the trailer being polychrome painted with dots and a pattern. The piece is likely from thr Comanche Indians of the Central Plains region and overall shows some slight loss to the matted fur but soft supple hides and little to no bead loss with no major rips, tears or damages. Truly a fantastic piece that displays very well and would be a prize to any collection. The headdress / head dress / war bonnet has the pattern and stylings as well as collection to be a 19th Century example, with the collector finding it of this age, overall exact age and origin are unknown or undetermined, please examine the piece for your own representation. Provenance: From the Jim Bastian collection of Kansas City, Missouri. Measures 34”L.
