Featured in this lot are the Charles M. Russell lithographs, "Return of the Warriors", and, "Blackfeet Burning Crow Buffalo Range". Both display Russell's signature in the bottom left corner. Both originally from Great Falls, Montana, the first was a Thomas D. Murphy Calendar topper from The Famous Mint bar in Great Falls that Charlie Russell regularly frequented when he lived there from 1897 until his death in 1926. Thomas D. Murphy was the first person who successfully developed advertising art calendars, and is the individual who is most responsible for the creation, development and expansion of the decorative art calendar industry. Murphy took pride in using works by outstanding artists on his calendars. He commissioned many paintings, and acquired reproduction rights to others. The second lithograph, circa 1905-1955, is mounted in a matte frame for The Hub clothing store in Great Falls, and was created by W. T. Ridgley Printing Company of Great Falls, in 1907 the leading purveyor of Russell prints, calendars, and postcards. The Ridgley postcards, especially a series of cartoon sketches in color done by Russell in 1907, caught the fancy of most who saw them and had an interest in things western. Both lithographs are in fair condition, age tanning and foxing noted. The Famous Mint bar T. D. M. Co. calendar measures 14.5"W x 18.75"L, visible art is 9.25"W x 13.25"L. The Hub W. T. Ridgley Printing Company measures 7.75"W x 11.25"L. Matte frame is 13.75"W x 17.25"L, visible art is 7.75"W x 11.25"L.
