This is an original silver albumen photograph stereoview of three Ute Indian Braves by Charles Weitfle dating to circa 1870-1880’s from the Francoise Perriot collection (it is noted by a collector as three Navajo’s Ganado Mucho, Tiene-su-se and Mariano). The stereoview is marked, “Popular Series” and in the image, “332 Three Ute Indian Braves”. Charles Weitfle (1836-1921) was one of the most prolific photographer and publisher of Central City, Colorado. In 1860 Weitfle opened a studio in Washington, D.C. and until the close of the Civil War operated a branch gallery with the 6th Army Corps. In 1878, he was drawn to the opportunities to settle in Central City, Colorado. The image shows three Native American Indian warriors noted by a collector as three Navajo warriors, Ganado Mucho, Tiene-su-se and Mariano, but noted by Weitfle as Three Ute Indian Braves. The center man, noted by some as Ganado Mucho, is shown holding a bow in typical Southern Indians regalia with noted silver earrings. On his flanks, noted as Tiene-su-se and Mariano, are shown also in typical form having wearing blanket. Truly an interesting an rare image by a noted photographer. Provenance: From the personal collection of Francoise Perriot (Françoise Perriot), noted historian author of the West and Native Americans. Perriot’s published works include such books as “Les Indiens et La Nature” (Indians and Nature) 2017, “La Conquête du Far West” (The Conquest of the Wild West) 2007, “Les Indiens d'Amérique du Nord” (North American Indians), “Guide Bleu : Etats-Unis Ouest Americain” (Blue Guide: United States West America). This piece and others come from her time collecting in Montana and the West, her book “Les Indiens et la nature” is one of the most notable in France documenting photographs of the west.
