The lot features an exceptional rare and highly collectible third quarter 19th Century Buffalo hide beaded pipe bag with fabulous “four tab” beadwork from the Cheyenne Native American Indians. The piece is constructed of Indian brain-tanned Buffalo Bison hide sew with sinew and is represented in a nice large size being 38 inches long including the fringe (but not including the draw string). The bag is adorned with a row of rolled tin jingle cones which are also shown on the draw string fringe and have a nice tarnished patina. The bag is beaded on both sides in the classic 19th Century Cheyenne “bar” pattern all in period correct glass trade seed beads, colors of cobalt, light blue, red and greasy yellow. The top shows a fancy beaded edge and the rare, more collectible style with four tabs sewn at the top with a fancy beaded edge. These are referred to as the Cheyenne “Four Tab Bag” and are very collectible and scarce. The piece is in very good condition with little to no bead loss and soft and supple hide. Provenance: From the ex-collection of wealthy Indian collector Cyrus Eaton in London, England. Dating to circa 1870-1880’s. Measures 38 inches long by 7 inches wide.
