Cheyenne Beaded Hide Pipe Bag w/ Pipe Symbols

The lot features a hide beaded pipe bag with geometric and pipe bowl and stem effigy symbol attributed to the Northern Cheyenne Native American Indians of Wyoming. The bag is comprised of soft supple Indian brain-tanned Rocky Mountain Elk hide, a softer example than that of buckskin or buffalo hide. The bag has classic Cheyenne beadwork colors and design on both sides with additional beaded “peace pipe” or catlinite pipestone bowl and stem motifs on both sides as well. One side shows two pipes and the other three pipes. The beadwork is across the opening, outside edge, pipes down the center and across all sides of the bottom square section. One side of the large beaded section shows a snake or hour glass pattern and the other a “block” Cheyenne design. The beadwork is in colors of light blue, cobalt, black, corn yellow, semi-transparent red with a chalk white background. The bag shows long thick soft fringes at the bottom and shorter fringes at the top beaded edge with the tie strap below all done in Indian tanned Elk hides. The beadwork is all cotton thread sewn and displays well. From the Jim Bastian Collection in Kansas City, Missouri. Measures overall 36”L by 7”W.
