This is a rare, authentic circa 1870’s beaded hide tobacco pouch / bag from the Cheyenne Native American Indians of Wyoming. The piece is from the ex-collection of Ted and Lilly Jarvis and was originally purchased at Christies Auction in New York back in the 1980’s for $3,500 and still has the original auction tag still with it. The bag shows an Indian brain tanned buckskin construction with light yellow ochre mineral pigment dyed finish further accented by the period correct glass trade seed beadwork in a traditional geometric linear pattern. The beadwork shows chalk white, cobalt, greasy yellow, medium green and red white hearts along with sky padre blue. The beadwork is shown on both the front and back with an artful strip connecting the base beadwork and fancy beaded top edge. The bag has a nice tapering body, typical of early examples and has a nice set of original ties fringe at the top showing the original fancy beaded tab ends, a wonderful artful addition. The base also shows the original long hand cut Indian tanned hide fringe in good condition as well. The piece is truly well preserved showing no tears or apparent repairs. Provenance: From the ex-collection of Ted and Lilly Jarvis who originally purchased the piece at a Christies Auction in New York during the 1980’s for $3,500 with the original tag still being present. $3,500 in 1980 is equivalent to $10,950.12 in 2020 dollars, due to inflation. The bag measures 18 inches long with fringe by 3 ½ inches wide.
