For your consideration is this hand painted, Chinese Mud Man (San Cai) porcelain sculpture from the 20th century. Mud Men sculptures, or San Cai sculptures originated in China during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) and were first made with glazed ceramaics. Initially, they were used to populate miniature landscapes called Penjing, which were the precursors to modern bonsai. These figurines, often depicting people, animals, and mythical creatures, became popular for their decorative and symbolic value, reflecting aspects of Chinese life and beliefs. This porcelain sculpture is hand painted and shows a man sitting on a stone as he fishes. He is holding a plastic fishing rod and has a fish in his basket. The bottom is signed reading, "China / 22". He sits freely on a wood base with a felt cover. It shows good condition overall with no wear present and no signs of damage noted. It measures 7 1/2" L x 7 1/2" W x 8 1/2" H and weighs 2 pounds and 2 ounces.
