For your consideration is a Small Chinese Porcelain Jar from the Wanli emperor, Zhu Yijun (or Yuzhai), reign of the Ming Dynasty, circa 1573-1620. Procured in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Provenance: the Owen D. Mort, Jr. Collection. Owen David Mort was an American engineer who amassed an impressive collection throughout his worldwide travels. His collection has included art, artifacts and other historical items from which he has donated to museums at the University of Utah and Snite Museum of Art, the University of Notre Dame including African, Afghan and Asian artifacts. Zhu Yijun was the longest reigning emperor among all the Ming dynasty emperors and it witnessed several successes in his early and middle reign, followed by the decline of the dynasty as the emperor withdrew from his active role in government around 1600. During Wanli’s reign, porcelain makers increasingly produced pieces for the export market to European countries like the Netherlands, as well as for the thriving domestic market. The Dutch East India Company was responsible for much of the export trade, and pieces fetched high prices at auctions in the Netherlands. This jar has an olive green fish scales-like exterior celadon glaze, a brownish with green/white colours floral design against a washed rust background; interior is a cream colour. Jar is in nice condition, interior lip exhibits evidence of restoration. Measures 4" diameter, 2.5" mouth and base diameter, 3.5"H
