The lot features an artful late 19th century Chippewa Gunstock Spontoon war club collected out of Wisconsin. The piece is from the ex-collection and was collected by Jan Sorgenfrei, the former owner of the Old Barn Auction in Findlay, Ohio and also from the collection of Tom Hardy from Santa Fe, New Mexico and Ohio. This example shows a unique hand-carved wooden haft with whimsical flaring gunstock design with incised carved lines, brass tacks and two large circular cut outs connected at the center. The bottom end pommel of the handle has a unique three leaf clover carved and holds a pierced hole that likely held a leather wrist thong at one time. At the head shows a large notch-cut trade blade inset into the haft, secured with an old nail stud with the end of the spontoon lance blade coming out of the back of the wood. The blade shows minor pitting and oxidation along with a mellow patina and has a terrific art appeal with its weeping heart and circle cut outs. The piece dates to the late 1800’s and was likely used after the Indian Wars period as a dance club. The spontoon blade measures 8 ½ inches in length by 1 ½ inches wide. The club overall measures 22 inches in length.
