Included in this lot is an antique Federal-style Mahogany inlay veneer fold-out Butler's writing desk with a conch shell motif inlay on the center drawer. The Federal Period introduced a variety of ornamental stylings such as fluting, inlays of contrasting woods to create shapes and designs, and banding with contrasting veneers as decorative borders. The pieces of this period exhibited a graceful elegance with heavy French and English influence. Hardware was typically brass in a variety of shapes found in nature. The Federal style combines the neoclassic furniture style characteristics of Hepplewhite and Sheraton. It is characterized by graceful straight lines, light construction, tapered legs, inlay, and contrasting veneers.
This piece has graceful dentil inlay marquetry design throughout the exterior. There is wear consisting of splits due to humid environments, some inlay is missing. Overall, condition is good for it's 200 plus year age, measurement is 31.25"L x 44.5"H x 15"W
