This is a fantastic circa 1850-1860’s spontoon pipe tomahawk. The design and style lean itself towards being from the Central Plains origin. The piece exhibits a hand-forged iron spontoon pattern trade head that is stamped HBC MONTREAL with a sitting fox touchmark / hallmark. This refers to the Hudson’s Bay Company. The spontoon double edge blade shows two impressive under-curled basal processes along with a weeping heart cut out at the center as well as a slight median ridge running along the center of the blade on both sides, an early documented weapons feature. The head is on an early hard ash wood haft with extensive hot file branding and a few brass trade tacks. The tomahawk exhibits a deep, shiny patina with minor wear. Truly a work of art piece being well kept with unusual scarce touchmark. Provenance: From a large weapons and beadwork collection in Indiana. The head measures 10 ½ inches long and overall 23 ½ inches long.
