This is a wonderful woven textile dating to circa 1960’s, a Zuni Wedding Sash. Evidence indicates that the Pueblos were making these before the arrival of the Spaniards as one figure in the Awatovi murals appears to be wearing a warp-faced belt. It is believed the Navajo and Zuni were taught this weave after the arrival of the Spaniards. The belt is worn in Zuni wedding ceremonies. The fringe on the belt represents rain, an important necessity for tribes to grow food. This belt shows colors of white, red and green, black and shows a repeating geometric design of both sides of the sash belt. the fringe is long on either ends of the sash belt with thicker woven balls. The weaves are good and show no signs of damage or wear. The sash belt measures 120" L (10 feet long) x 4.5" W.
