Featured in this lot are two pieces of Fulgurite found in Cline Butte, near Bend Deschutes Co., Oregon. Natural glass tubes or crusts called fulgurites are created when lightning strikes rock or silica (quartz) sand. They have a form that resembles the lightning bolt's descent into the earth. A temperature of 1800 degrees Celsius is required to instantaneously melt sand and form a fulgurite (most lightning strikes have a temperature of 2500 degrees Celsius). Sand fulgurite tubes have a glassy interior, due to rapid cooling and solidification of the sand after the lightning strike. Both of the pieces are sand fulgurites, showing hardened sand on the outside and smoothed, melted sand on the edges where the lighting struck. The pieces show colors of grey and black. The larger piece measures 1" L x 13/16" W, while the smaller piece measures 15/16" L x 1/2" W. The case they are set in measure 4 1/4" L x 3 1/4" W x 7/8" D.
