Joseph Csatari (born 1929, South River, New Jersey, as son of Hungarian immigrants) is a realist artist who worked with Norman Rockwell. As a boy, Csatari had painstakingly recreated Saturday Evening Post covers that Rockwell had painted. Like his mentor Rockwell, he also served as art director of Boys' Life magazine at the beginning of his career, being named to that position in 1973. This was the time he worked closely with Rockwell. Csatari's job was to come up with possible themes for the paintings and make rough sketches for Rockwell. Once Rockwell decided on a concept, Csatari would gather models and shuttle them up for a photo shoot in the artist's studio in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Csatari often assisted Rockwell on his work at this time as by then Rockwell was aging. In 1976 when Rockwell retired from the calendar commission, the BSA asked Csatari to continue in the Rockwell tradition. In 1977, shortly before Rockwell died, Csatari was commissioned as the Boy Scouts of America's official artist. In this collection are ten prints that Csatari did called "The New Spirit of Scouting" These prints are on heavy paper 14' X 11" with the art being 11 1/2" X 8 1/2". "The Reunion" shows middle age men poising with their Cub Scout photos, "You Can Do It" shows a troop encouraging a member in his physical fitness test, "Scouting Through The Years" shows Young boys listening to a grandfather talk of his scouting days as mother and father look on. "Family Camping" Shows a family of Father, Mother Sister and two boys, one in cub scout and one in Boy Scout uniforms carrying gear to a campsite, "Eagle Service Project" shows four scouts caring tools and a Beagle on the way to work on a Eagle Service Project, "It's a Boys Life" Shows three scouts at a camp site reading a Boys Life magazine with Joe Montana's photo on the cover, "the Patrol Leader" show an older scout instructing five younger scouts on how to pack a back pack, "After Hours Shows an adult scout leader demonstrating first aid wraps to three scouts and the dog watches and the Mother brings in refreshments, "a Winter Camping Scene" show a group of scouts at a winter camp welcoming a newly arrived group, The Strength Of Scouting Through Volunteers" shows a young scout with a thank you card before a group of eight adult leaders. These prints have a 1986 copyright mark. Even though they are in the Rockwell style they show a subtle welcomed change of the times with an ethnic diversity not seen in previous works. All proceeds from these items will go to the Montana Counsel of the Boy Scouts of America.
