In this lot is a collection of four pairs of bookends that are Native American Chief themed. First is a pair of cast iron "End of The Trail" style bookends. These book ends are based off the famous "End of the Trail" statue by James Earle Fraser. Fraser based it on his experience as a boy in the Dakota Territory. His memoirs state, "As a boy, I remembered an old Dakota trapper saying, 'The Indians will someday be pushed into the Pacific Ocean.'" Later he stated, "The idea occurred to me of making an Indian which represented his race reaching the end of the trail, at the edge of the Pacific." These bookends measure 5 3/4" X 4 1/2" X 2". They have a bronze color finish, which is worn off. The second set is made of resin and is a side view of a chief in a full feather headdress. These bookends are colored wood brown with red, green, and gold highlights. The bookends measure 5 1/2" X 5 3/4" X 1". The next pair of bookends shows a kneeling chief with a bow. The chief’s whole body is showing as he kneels with his back to the books. The ends are made of chalk wear and have a bronze color to them. These bookends are marked “copyright 1942 E.C.A”. These bookends measure 8 1/2" X 5" X 4". The last pair in this lot is a bust of an Indian chief. The chief has long braids and a full feather headdress. These bookends are made of chalk wear and colored a copper color. These bookends are marked on the back “Ceramic Art Works Redcliff Alta." One of these bookends had the base broken and repaired. These bookends measure 6" X 4 1/2" X 3 1/2". All of these bookends have wear and chips due to age and use.
