In this lot is a Colt Bisley .44-40 Frontier Six Shooter with desirable 4 ¾” barrel made1904. This is a lovely untouched example that was period fitted with now mellow and aged stag grips. During this time of production the most common caliber for this iconic handgun was .32-20 with the .38-40 close behind in sales. The big .44-40 and .45 Colt Bisleys were made in fewer numbers and are now difficult to find. The .44-40 or .44 W.C.F. (Winchester Center Fire) chambered Colts were typically paired with a rifle or carbine of the same caliber and are almost always associated with frontier use. In fact, only this chambering has the “COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” stamping below “(BISLEY MODEL)” on the left side of the barrel. This is a truly fine example showing good lightly aged blue on the cylinder, fine blue on the barrel with only some wear and browning on the left side from holster carry. The ejector housing retains excellent blue on the top and bottom portions with some of the outside showing wear again from holster carry. The barrel top retains the sharp two line Colt address marking that was only used on 4 ¾” revolvers with the more common 5 ½” and 7 ½” versions having a one line marking. This revolver with serial number 254846 also retains screws with excellent screw heads and an unmarred cylinder pin. The action is fine and the bore is surprisingly excellent with sharp rifling all the way through. The case colored frame and blued grip straps have aged to a soft and uncleaned plum-brown patina with fine blue on the trigger guard sides and protected areas. This Colt also has matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard and grip strap along with sharp patent markings on the left side of the frame. The Bisley variation of the famed Single Action Army was a popular arm on the western frontier and is often seen in period photographs especially from the Southwest. An uncleaned example in this rare and desirable .44-40 caliber is a true treasure. A fine Colt in an exceptional state of preservation with a great deal of blue! The period stag grips also add to the attractive appearance of this Frontier Bisley! The revolver weighs 2lbs. 8oz. Serial Number: 254846. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic firearm, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.*
