Included in this lot is a Colt Model 1848 Baby Dragoon single action black powder revolver chambered in .31 caliber. This example is a Baby Dragoon Model with a 3” barrel chambered in .31 caliber. The Colt 1848 Baby Dragoon was originally made from 1847 to 1850, with a total of approximately 15,000 manufactured. It was a 5-shot revolver in .31 caliber and was essentially a scaled down model of the Dragoon. It was intended as a pocket pistol, and to cut down on the weight of the pistol, the loading lever assembly was deleted from the design. It was offered in a 3"-, 4"-, 5"-, and 6"-inch barrel and was popular with Pony Express and Wells Fargo riders. The revolver displays a five-shot cylinder, etched battle scene across the cylinder, attached under barrel ram rod, and brass trigger guard and back strap. The revolver is marked across the top of the barrel "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY" and marked on the left side of the frame "COLTS PATENT". The cylinder is marked on the side "COLTS PATENT No 14187" with faded etched battle scene across the cylinder. The piece shows good working action with tight mechanics. The piece is marked with matching serial numbers across the revolver. Serial Number: 14187 and was manufactured in 1850. This firearm qualifies as an antique and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
