RARELY OFFERED, FACTORY SHOULDER STOCK FOR THE FAMED COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER. This one is in the correct serial range for these, #79497, which puts its production date at 1857. Most of these shoulder stocked revolvers were sold on the civilian market (this one was made 4 years before the beginning of the Civil War) and this example has fancy '"fiddle-back" striped grain to the walnut. It may have been part of a deluxe cased set at one time. The serial number is correctly stamped just behind the bottom clamp in the brass and has the correct sling swivel. By looking carefully, one can detect an oval wood inlay in the bottom of the stock about 3 inches from the butt plate. It is possible there was once a silver or brass presentation or identification plate that was removed that was done so professionally well that it is hard to detect. Overall, it displays mellow, aged brass fittings and butt plate. The excellent wood fits well and is dark with grime from age that could use a good clean to reveal more of the fancy grained walnut. Fine steel adjustment wheel and bottom clamp. Shoulder stocks turned percussion revolvers into short, six-shot carbines with greater accuracy and longer range potential. They were highly regarded and highly coveted during their time of use. The Colt Model 1851 stock is considerably more scarce than the Model 1851 cut-for-stock revolver itself. Finding such a stock is extremely difficult, especially one in this fine state of preservation with all brass and steel fittings intact plus built with high-grade fancy walnut. A rare Colt and a rare offering. NO FFL.
