This is a scarce Colt Model 1855 Root Side Hammer Pocket Revolver with fluted cylinder chambered in .31 caliber with a silver plated presentation finish manufactured in 1856. The Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer, also known as the Colt Root Revolver - Named after Elisha K. Root who was Colt’s factory foreman and general superintendent - was Colt's only percussion handgun built on the solid frame principle and featured a side-hammer, mounted on the right side of the frame, a spur trigger, a cylinder pin entering from the rear and one-piece grips secured to the back-strap. The revolver has a serial number of 5628 being manufactured in 1856. The revolver utilizes a 4 1/2" long barrel, Fluted five shot cylinder, underlug cartridge rammer, integral nipples, and rare silver plated finish over blue. The top of the frame is marked "Address Col. Colt New-York U.S.A." and the cylinder is marked "Patented Sept. 10th 1850". The revolver is marked with the serial number "5628" on the underside of the barrel and butt of the grip, matching. This revolver displays good condition overall with some wear due to age.
