Featured in this lot we have a Colt "Root" Model 1855 side hammer revolver chambered in .28 caliber. The revolver displays a 3 1/2" long octagonal barrel, five shot cylinder, side hammer design, walnut grips, and spur trigger design. The Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer, also known as the Colt Root Revolver - Named after Elisha K. Root who was Colt's factory foreman and general superintendent - was Colt's only percussion handgun built on the solid frame principle and featured a side-hammer, mounted on the right side of the frame, a spur trigger, a cylinder pin entering from the rear and one-piece grips secured to the back-strap. The Root was manufactured between 1855 to 1870 - This being a serial number 5138, attributing it to "Model 2" status. The Model 2 Root Revolver utilizes a 3 1/2" octagon barrel, blue'd frame & barrel, underlug cartridge rammer, integral nipples, and the "Cabin and Indian" scene faintly engraved in the cylinder. Additionally, the revolver is marked with the correct roll-stamping, reading "COLT'S PT. - 1855" with the pointing finger motif, and "ADRESS COL. COLT - HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." all on the top of the barrel, "COLT'S PATENT" on the cylinder, and matching serial numbers on the butt of the grips, underneath the underlug ram-rod, and on the cylinder. The frame is marked across both sides reading "H. E. Mac Kain". Overall, the revolver shows good condition overall retaining some of the original finish and showing a warm patina. The revolver weighs 1lb. Serial Number: 5138. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
