Cased and Engraved Colt Third Model .41 Rim Fire Derringer with early serial number 2653. The Colt Third Model Derringer also known as the “Thuer” Model was manufactured from 1870-1912 in a serial range from 1 to approximately 48000. This outstanding example was probably made in the first few years of production that began in 1870. The bronze frame is profusely scroll engraved on the sides with less engraving on the forward bottom, butt and upper back strap. The frame was originally nickel plated and liberal nickel remains on the grip straps, rear spur trigger portion and in the protected areas on each side of the hammer. Importantly, the nickel plating is still inside the engraving pattern indicating that the engraving was performed before the plating was applied by Colt. Therefore, this appears to be factory engraved. The barrel shows fine scroll on the top and sides as well as a ribbon at the muzzle. A border has also been engraved around the correct large italics “COLT” stamping on the barrel top. The barrel was also originally full nickel plated with good nickel remaining in the protected areas and for a portion behind the rear sight. Again, very importantly, the remaining nickel covers the inside of the engraving pattern. This outstanding Colt was probably carried in a small holster that covered the pistol to the top of the grips as this is where most of the nickel wear is located. No doubt, placing this little pistol in and out of the holster eventually wore the nickel. However, the fact that where the nickel is not worn shows fine engraving offers the best proof that this .41 derringer was factory engraved. In the classic book Colt Engraving by R. L. Wilson there are illustrations of similar engraving done during this period. Also, the walnut grips fit perfectly and are numbered to the frame serial number located under the grips. The nickel is matching on the inside of the frame in this protected area. On the underside of the barrel, barely visible are two tiny British proof marks. Colt’s London Agency received large quantities of all models of Colt revolvers at this time and the derringers were particularly popular there. The tight French fitted case is in excellent condition and is lined in classic royal purple material that shows only light wear. The case is made to tightly fit this derringer, an “L” shaped thin screw driver/cleaning rod combination tool and three .41 Short Rim Fire cartridges- all of which are intact. The black textured case is fitted with German silver hinges and swing-arm hasp. It is tightly fitting and in overall excellent condition showing only the very slightest of edge and corner wear. These derringer pistols, especially embellished like this example, were very popular with members of the British upper class. Aside from close range protection, they were considered status symbols. A gentleman armed with such a fine defensive weapon not only felt protected, but indeed smug! And for a woman to be so armed brought a sense of elegance. A rare chance to own such an intriguing piece of dramatic history. Serial Number: 2653. This firearm qualifies as an Antique, and does not require FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
