Included in this lot we have a complete fossilized cave bear paw originating from the Pleistocene period. The cave bear (Ursus Spelaeus) was a species of bear that lived in Europe and Asia during the Pleistocene, also know as the ice age. The cave bear is most closely related to modern day brown bears and got there name due to fossils mostly being found in caves. It is believed that cave bears spent the majority of their time living in caves rather then just for hibernation. Cave bears went extinct around 24,000 years ago during the last glacial maximum. The paw shows a full set of jointed fingers with short claws at each end. The fingers have been strung together using metal wire and the palm has had the pieces glued together. The paw shows museum quality and would make a fine addition to any collection. The piece shows good condition for its age with some wear and sections showing some of the porous spongy bone interior. The cave bear paw measures 13 1/2" long by 7 1/4" wide.
