Presented in this lot is an Original Mandan/Sioux Artist Bridget Eagle Feather, "Crazy Horse Shield", from the "Spirit of the Plains" collection, circa mid-20th century . The hand-painted shield is made of deerskin, trade cloth, horse tail, brass cones, glass trade beads, and turkey feathers. From the Provenance card, "Tasunka Witna (Crazy Horse) personified bravery, wisdom, & spirit, and was one of the the greatest of all Sioux chiefs. The blue & white circles depict hail, the yellow slash down the center is lightning. The blue trade cloth represents the blue leggings worn by Crazy Horse which were made from the pony soldiers uniforms. The feathers on the trade cloth represent honors, won through bravery on the battlefield." This traditional style shield is in very fine condition, all the elements are affixed with leather thongs, a leather thong strap is used at the top for wall hanging. No marring noted, shield measures 17.25" diameter, with the trade cloth extending 10" further.
