The lot features a beaded and painted hide pipe bag attributed to the Crow Native American Indians of the early 1900’s. The bag is comprised of Indian tanned Buffalo hide and appears to be sinew sewn. The front shows a geometric beaded pattern across the bottom with a vertical border strip on one side and bag opening also being beaded all with glass trade seed beads in a typical Crow fashion. At the center of the bag is a geometric polychrome painted pattern in faded pastel colors with triangular or tipi and hourglass or snake like patterns. The beadwork shows a diamond and cross pattern in greasy white, light blue, greasy yellow, medium green, Cheyenne pink and semi-transparent red. Provenance: From the ex Jim Bastian Kansas City, Missouri and Mark Francis collections. The bottom fringe appears to be of an early age but has been replaced contemporarily. Measures overall 33 inches in length by 4.75”W.
