Featured in this lot is this first edition 1889 copy of “Cruising in the Cascades and Other Hunting Adventures”, by American writer and sportsman, George Oliver Shields (1846-1925). This book has 339 pages and includes a portrait, 30 full page illustrations, 77 illustrations total, decorated initial letters, and eleven pages of advertisement in the back. The book has a brown cloth cover, gold gilt spine and cover titles, and pictorial decorations with floral decorated end papers. A quarter of the book is devoted to the author's description of hunting in the Harrison Lake, Montana area. It also describes Lillooet Indians and hunting and fishing in British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, and Texas. The articles on elk, bear, and antelope hunting were first published in Harper's Magazine; those on buffalo hunting and trout fishing were in the Outing Magazine. This is a very attractive book with gilt-embossed elk on the front cover. The condition of this book is good, with slight wear to the cover and the spine of the book and browning to the pages consistent with the age of the book. The measurements of this book are 8 3/4" x 6 1/4" x 1 1/4".
