Included in this lot is a Vintage Currier & Ives Coloured Lithograph of "American Express Train", circa mid century. Originally painted by Frances Flora Bond Palmer, this was printed and published by Currier & Ives, 1864. Frances Flora Bond Palmer, often referred to as "Fanny" Palmer, was a successful lithographer, was the leading female lithographer of her time, and is best known for her illustrations of American life for Currier and Ives. She became one of Currier & Ives’s most prolific and versatile printmakers. She created at least 170 of the firm’s finest and best-loved prints, ranging in subject matter from farm scenes and landscapes to railroad trains, steamboat, still lifes, and sporting prints. It is believed that she also produced many of the smaller anonymous prints. Currier & Ives produced meticulously detailed “portraits” of select trains in order to satisfy the demand for images of the iron horse. Based in New York City, Currier & Ives (1835-1907) was the most successful and most prolific print publisher in the nineteenth century. Period bird's eye frame. Coloured lithograph featuring the train in the foreground with a steam paddlewheeler and sailboats plying the Hudson River, the rolling hills and Catskill mountains of the Hudson River Valley framing the scene, white clouds filling the overhead skies. Exactly the images Palmer was known for painting. The lithograph is in nice condition, lovely colours. Painted hardwood matted frame is in poor to fair condition, loose corners, flaking paint, age tanning and foxing exhibited on matting. Visible art measures 9"W x 14.25"L, frame 15.25"W x 19.25" x .75"D, weight 3lb.
