Featured in this lot are raw and polished almandine garnets from the Custer, South Dakota area. Almandine garnet specimens are very uncommon from the 10 localities, that MINDAT, a non-commercial online database used by professional mineralogists, geologists, and mineral collectors, lists for the county. The polished garnets great you with a dark red, almost black color, but when held up to light reveal a nice red/light purple hue with slight transparency. The largest polished garnets measure up to 0.5 cm with the smallest around 0.3 cm. The unpolished garnets are larger, with the largest measuring in at 1.2 cm and the smallest at 0.2 cm. Total carat weight of 33.7 carats.
