Featured in this lot is this Rare 1886 D. F. Barry Albumen Photograph of Little Bighorn Battlefield 10th Anniversary Skirmish Line. Provenance: Was listed and sold through Heritage Auctions, also sold 10th Anniversary photograph through North American Auction Company in the Jan. 18, 2025 for $4800.00 (shown w/ BP). The photograph is by famed Indian potographer David F. Barry who entered the photography profession during the wet plate days in 1878 as a protege of frontier photographer Orlando Scott Goff. Became an apprentice, business partner, employee to Goff, and finally, in 1884, Barry bought Goff's studio in Bismarck and began his own photographic pursuits, becoming over the years one of the most celebrated Indian photographers throughout the West. Original Barry Photograph. This is a sepia-toned photo of Reno Hill, Custer Battlefield, Montana, June 25, 1886. Taken at the ceremonies for the 10th anniversary of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, this image features individuals acting out parts of the Battle, seen here as the US Army on Reno Hill. In Front of the Large group of men on horseback, can be seen one individual wearing all white - probably representing Custer himself. A smaller group of horsemen can be seen on the far ridge (perhaps the Indians?). On the verso, Barry himself has made a few notations in pencil: "Reno Hill. Taken June 25, 1886 10th Anniversary. Custer Battlefield Reno Hill." Barry's sticker is affixed at the upper left corner (verso) and reads: "D.F. BARRY Photographs of all noted Indian Chiefs PHOTOGRAPHGER 1316 Tower Ave. Superior, Wisconsin." Above this sticker, Barry has penciled the word "From." The condition of this framed photograph is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage and shows a well preserved condition. This is a highly rare and desirable photo, one sold at our (North American Auction Co.) January 2025 auction for $4,800 (w/ bp). The measurements of this framed photograph is 10 3/4" x 12 3/4" and the visible art work measures 6 3/8" x 8 1/4". The collective weight of this framed photograph is 1lb 10oz.
