For your consideration is this limited edition print done by Dale Gallon in 1991 titled, "Hold At All Costs". Dale Gallon is a well-known American historical artist, best recognized for his vibrant and carefully researched paintings of the American Civil War. Gallon was born in Southern California in 1945 and attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, where he perfected his classical technique. His early career included work as a commercial artist, but he eventually shifted his concentration to historical fine art, motivated by a great interest in military history. Gallon rose to national prominence for his ability to combine exact period information with dramatic storytelling, frequently conferring with historians, touring battlefields, and utilizing actual clothes and equipment in his research. In 1984, he founded Gallon Historical Art at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania—an appropriate site for him to immerse himself in Civil War history. This piece shows Joshua Chamberlain standing near his men in the middle of the Gettysburg Battle. One man holds an American flag as others take aim or reload their weapons. Smoke fills the air and fallen soldiers are scattered on the ground but Joshua stands tall in the heat of the moment as a reminder to his men to keep fighting. The top is marked reading, "The Commanders", while the bottom is marked reading, "399/950 / Hold At All Costs by Dale Gallon / D. Gallon". It is signed by Dale Gallon in the bottom right hand corner. The piece has been professionally framed with double matting and set in a cherry wood frame. Three certificate style papers are set in an envelope tapped to the back of the frame giving information on the piece and the framing.
