An historic and rare "Darius Allen, Weather Prophet", John The Shoeman advertiser with photo c. 1900, made by the Providence Albertype Company in Phillipsdale, Rhode Island, it is possible the photo dates from the late 1800s.
Fine original Albertype B+W silver emulsion photo mounted on postcard-size thick olive color cardboard. Darius Allen, a near hermit of a man renowned across the length and breadth of southern New England as the "Great Weather Prophet of North Kingstown". Allen was tapped by newspapers of the day for weather predictions through the 1890s, long before modern scientific forecasting. He foresaw the Great Blizzard of 1898 to the week it would occur, cementing his reputation. John The Shoeman was a department store in Providence in the late 1800s into the first decade of the 1900s.
