Featured in this lot is this albumen photograph called "Memorial Day Mass - Fort Yates 1892" attributed to David F. Barry born in 1854 and died in 1934. The photograph shows a congregation at mass on Memorial Day at Fort Yates in 1892. The photograph reads on the back: Ft. Yates 1892 - Memorial Day Mass -- Ft. Yates -- 1892 Building under construction is Post Commissary. The photograph comes with a museum or collectors tag that reads as follows: 1396-87 O'dell. David Francis Barry (March 6, 1854 – March 6, 1934) was a 19th-century photographer of the American West. Between 1878 and 1883, utilizing a portable photographic studio, Barry traveled throughout the Plains, to Fort Buford and Fort Yates in the Dakotas and Fort Assiniboine in Montana taking photographs as he went. Having taken over Goff's business interests he eventually set up his own studio at Fort Yates and later in Bismarck. Barry made his name photographing Lakota people notables such as Sitting Bull, Rain-in-the-Face, Gall (Phizi), John Grass and others. The condition of this Fort Yates photograph is well preserved with no obvious signs of damage to the photograph and some slight wear to the black paint of the frame. The measurements of this famed albumen photograph is 8 1/4" x 10 3/8" and the visible photograph measures 6 1/2" x 9". The collective weight of this framed photograph is 12oz. Provenance: From the John Kleinschmidt collection which was on loan to the C.M. Russell Museum from 1987 to 1993 and included in the "The Cowboy West: 100 Years of Photography 1992-1993 exhibit.
