This lot has a pair of Deer Lodge Montana state prison Hitched Horsehair Key Fobs. The key fobs feature a dyed hitched horsehair design, some of the colors are navy blue, red, grey, brown and others. The tops feature a leather loop and horsehair tassel at the bottom. Horsehair hitching, in which horsehair is braided into decorative, functional pieces, goes back to the late 1800s in penitentiary craft program throughout the western United States. Eventually, Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge became the best known, and the most prolific for horsehair goods, including key fobs, hat bands, belts, and bridles. The quality of the pieces are excellent.
