Featured in this lot is an antique Diamonds and Spinel 14K Two-tone Gold Ring, size 5 1/4, circa early 1900s. The unique basket style setting features twelve (12) small spinel stones surrounding four larger diamonds and an even larger marquis cut spinel stone centered above. A very stylish and brilliant cocktail style ring. The actual mining of spinel began in Afghanistan between 750 and 950 A.D., documented by Marco Polo. Spinel can be found on several continents, from Brazil in South America, Kenya in Africa, and especially across the southern portion of Asia, stretching from Afghanistan to Vietnam. It has been commonly found in gravel beds in Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Madagascar, and marble deposits in Vietnam.
